Two fitters carrying a new rooflight up a driveway

About Radiant Skylights

We fit rooflights and skylights in Basildon and 30 road miles around, and we judge every part of the job on how warm it keeps the room as well as how bright.

01Who we are

A fitting team with one idea about glass

Radiant Skylights fits rooflights and skylights in Basildon and the country around it, and everything we choose is judged on two things: how much light it brings in and how much heat it keeps.

A rooflight is a window set into the roof. A skylight is the same thing by another name, and you will hear both. We fit new ones where a room has none, and we replace old ones that have worn out or let the cold in.

The idea behind the firm is simple. A bright room that is chilly on a January morning is only half a success. So the glass, the frame, the insulated kerb or upstand (the raised edge the glass sits on), the warm-edge seal and the lining inside are all picked for warmth as well as daylight.

Bright rooms, warm all year: that is the job, and every part of the fitting is chosen to serve it.

02Why warmth

Why we care about the heat as much as the light

Glass lets heat out faster than a solid roof does, so a poor choice shows up as a cold spot and a bigger heating bill.

People ring us because a room is dark. Few ask what the new opening will do to the temperature underneath. We ask it for them, because a rooflight that makes the room hard to sit in is a bad fit, however bright it looks on the day.

The fix is in the detail. These are the parts of a fitting that decide how warm the room stays.

What decides how warm it stays

Glazing
Double glazed as a minimum, with a low-e coating that holds heat in the room
Spacer
Warm-edge, so the rim of the glass is not a cold line
Kerb or upstand
Insulated, so heat does not slip out round the frame
Join to the roof
Frame and roof insulation meet without a gap
Lining
Fitted inside to finish the opening and keep the warmth where you can feel it

Our warm specification page goes through each of these in full.

03How a job runs

How a job runs, from first photo to finished room

You deal with one team all the way through, and nobody new turns up halfway.

  1. You send photos and rough sizes, or get in touch and tell us about the room. Our quote page says what helps most.
  2. We visit for a free survey, look at the roof and the room, and talk through what will suit.
  3. You get a written quote that names the product, the glazing, the kerb and the lining.
  4. We agree a date. The same fitting team does the work from start to finish.
  5. Where the work is notifiable, we handle the Building Control notification, and the work is done to current Building Regulations.
  6. We leave the room clean and talk you through what we have fitted.

04In your home

How we treat your home

Fitting a roof window means work above your head and dust below it, so the first job is to protect what is underneath.

Floors and furniture are covered before anything is opened up. The opening is made, the unit is fitted and the lining finished with the room kept as clean as we can keep it. You will know who is in your house and what they are doing that day.

05Where we work

Where we fit rooflights

We cover Basildon and 30 road miles around it, which reaches across south Essex, into East London, up into north Kent and out to the Hertfordshire edge.

Basildon homes are our starting point, from the new-town estates to the plotland bungalows of Laindon and Langdon Hills. Beyond that, the areas we cover page lists the towns by county, so you can see whether yours is inside the radius.

  • Measured in road miles from Basildon, not in a straight line
  • Free survey and written quote in every area we cover
  • The same 10-year workmanship guarantee wherever the job is

Questions about Radiant Skylights

Do you fit both new and replacement rooflights?

Yes. We install rooflights and skylights where there is none, and we replace existing ones.

Is the survey really free?

Yes. The survey and the written quote cost you nothing, and there is no obligation to go ahead.

Who handles Building Control?

We do, where the work is notifiable. We tell you at the quote stage whether yours is.

Will it make my room colder?

Not if it is specified for warmth. Warm-edge glazing is standard, and the kerb and lining are part of the same plan.
